i lifted my hand, and maybe it was because i was consciously placing focus on it, but suddenly it looked brown and gnarled, like an old woman's. i hate my hands. or rather, my arms. i am a thin person, so skinny that sometimes it makes me feel self-conscious or even ugly. skinny jeans have to be worn sparingly because they make me feel like a stick. cutting my hair short made me look and feel even skinnier (what to do, i had been warned...). i used to load on bangles on my wrists like nobody's business (it isn't) until i realised how they made my wrists look extra tiny. tiny, like, not human-like. skin and bones. my hands, they look like someone else's attached on a wooden stick. as i stared at my hand it began to look strange, like how you would repeat a single word again and again until it sounds funny. my fingers are not long; i like hands with long fingers. i think long fingers are sexy, they make me think of piano players. but my fingers are not short or... In the middle of August 2002, I made a life-changing decision in five minutes, that made me who I am today. I was driving through Virginia I think, with my girlfriend at the time, on our way back to South Carolina from Maine. I had just moved to South Carolina from Indiana the beginning of August, and we were going to get married. Now, here we are, after postponing the wedding at the last minute, on a road trip, and she says “I think we should break up.” And goes to sleep. This is the biggest “Oh shit” moment I’d ever had in my life.
